Through the years, trends and styles have changed but one thing has remained steadfast and that is our growing choices in countertops that become availalbe year by year.  In the past, laminate was the #1 choice of most homeowners, however, with the appearence of more reasonably priced and readily availalbe solid surface products, laminate countertops have dropped in usage from 18% in 2006 to 11% in 2007.  The aforementioned solid surface has become the overwhelming favorite although it to has dropped in usage to 32% from 39% in 2006, still leaving it the most widely utilized material for countertops.  With such a huge span in usage between the well known laminate and widely used solid surface, there are quite a few other materials that are either new to the industry or have been making a strong showing in recent years.  Among these inculde wood countertops, which made up 11% of countertops in 2007 which is up strong from 8% in 2006 while granite also grew from 11% to 17% in 2007.  Up and coming stainless steel & metal represent 6% of the population while enginered quartz accounts for about 15%.  The once popular tile, used extensively in the '80's, only accounted for about 1% of the countertop population in 2007, down from 3% in 2006.  What do all of these statistics mean to the average homeowner?  Lots of materials are availalbe all based on budget and taste, keeping in mind that each has it's own set of advantages and disadvantages.  We will cover each material in detail at a later time.

So what does this mean for the future of countertops?  It's difficult to forsee but unusual seems to be the coming trend as we have seen some of the most unique products this year than ever before including countertops made of recycled glass & concrete.  Even with all this knowledge and the vass array of choices available to us, one thing is for sure.  Countertops are no longer just a place for preparing food in the kitchen or setting toiletries on in the bathroom.  They are now a reflection of our homes and our own personal style.  What does your countertop say about you?
