After the devistation of Hurrican Ivan, the state of Florida formed a program called My Safe Florida Home.  I'm sure some of you have heard about it, but if not, heres the scope.  The program was designed to help individuals make their homes more wind resistant.  Origianlly it was geared toward the elderly of Florida, however, as the years passed and the public became aware of this program, questions were raised as to how "others" could participate in the program.  Thus the program was widened.  This is how it works.  Log on to www.mysafefloridahome.com
Then, you want to apply for a FREE wind inspection (yes, its free, absolutley no catches, we know because we had one done).  You will need basic information about your homeowners insurance, year it was built, etc.  Once you have submitted your info on line, you have begun the process.  At that point, you will be scheduled for a free wind inspection.  Within approx 2 weeks, the inspector will contact you to set up an appointment.  The inspection will take approx 30 minutes.  At that point, the inspector will submit your inspection to the State of Florida and in about 4-6 wks you will receive a detailed report about the wind resistance of your home.  Included in this report will be improvements that can be done to your home to improve the resistance quality of it, how much it will cost etc.  Now to the best part.  Because this program is funded by the State of Florida, there are grants available through this program to help with these improvements.  There are two types of grants to qualify for.  One is a matching grant up to $5000.  Here you have the work completed and then you get reimbursed up to $5000.  The other is a non-matching grant.  Here, if you income qualify, you can have up to $5000 in wind improvements done to your home at no cost to you.  Either way, it's a win, win situation.  There is absolutley no obligation.  No matter what, the home inspection is FREE.   Our experience is that home inspections can be costly, so if nothing else, you can learn more about the saftey of the structure of your home. Check it out.  When the funds run out, so will the program. www.mysafefloridahome.com
