Old, leaky fireplace turned entertainment centerOur house was built in 1986. It had the standard contractor grade fireplace unit, chimney, etc. We loved using it over the years but it sustained quite a bit of damge during hurricane Ivan. We had the chimney rebuilt and it was useable again, but we seemed to loose alot of air through there and we noticed the firebox had a crack in it. So instead of going to the expense of replacing the firebox and upgrading it, we decided to turn it into an entertainment center. Once I tore out the existing fireplace box and into the mantle wall, the existing fireplace structure was useable for the basis for the entertainment unit. The only thing that was left to do from there was the sheetrock work and cosmetic work. The chimney still remains but I covered the top completely with a full chimney pan. The houses in our neighborhood are basically cookie cutter type houses and they all have the same fireplace. But once I took ours out and replaced it with an entertainment center it automatically changed the asthetic value of our home along with the monetary value. The top picture is the completed unit. Below that is the before or after I had already removed the fireplace. You can see just above the open area on either side there are small, arched windows. I wanted to duplicate that above the entertainment unit to make it uniform.
